catch the wind

For as long as I can remember, music has always been an important part of my life. My parents both loved to sing and play and they really instilled that same love in me.

I suppose there are a number of things that I could do with my time, but making music just seems to take me to that place where everything seems right.

I started drumming with the gospel youth choir at my church at the age of 11. It taught me a lot about rhythm and balance and the discipline of being in a band. People make jokes about drummers not being real musicians. But honestly, I see the kit as an incredibly dynamic and expressive instrument. All the other areas of music that I’ve moved into have built on that foundation.

Sometime in my teens, I started writing songs and playing guitar. Something inside me just got consumed with the fire to express myself in that way. Very few things in life make me as fulfilled as when I can share my original songs with people. It’s like singing sets free some very deep part of me. It’s been a true gift to me in some of the hardest periods of my life.

And worship is like a whole other level of that expression. When I sing to God, He instantly lets me know that he hears me. I love that.

I truly believe that He is my perfect, constant, loving Father. He loves me for who I am, without any strings attached. And there is nothing better than that.
